Birds of Paradise by TereseNielsen Birds of Paradise by TereseNielsen
This Illustration was done as a promo card for Magic the Gathering's M11 set.

The size of this piece is 13 x 9.75" and painted traditionally in acrylic and colored pencil, a minimal amount of mediums for me.

I frequently post extra info about specific pieces on my blog. My latest post [link] shows some of the playable cards that I embellished a little. I've also included a detail to show you what a portion of the painting looks like up close, and, you can find prints available as well.

I'd love to hear, for future posts, if there are other things you'd like to know about the art, or the process. My attempt is to be a wee bit informative whenever possible.

Beautiful. I would love to see a species with purple claws and a black and yellow head like that. It's almost like a peacock.

Someone should push WotC to do a judge promo BoP with this art in the old frame. I'd be ecstatic to find a set of those in my next GP packet...

Very cool artwork. I like the mystical and not overly majestic feel the bird has. Still wish I had that promo card.

Is this a Reggina Bird of Paradise? It's been awhile since I studied them but I know there are two similiar species, one being white the other orange.

But anyway beautiful work! XD

Beautiful! I love all the intricate curving shapes in the tail, and the color scheme is great.

I love how youve done the tail, all flowy, wispy, colourful and stylized. Because when you think of Birds of paradise you do think of these long colourful tails and shapes

Very nice. You now, this reminds me (a bit) of the Persian miniaturist Farshian. Google him sometime, I expect (but I can be wrong of course) You'll like him.

Hah! A legit Bird of Paradise for a Bird of Paradise card! I remember getting one as one of my first rares waaaaaay back in 6th Ed. Ahhh, memories =D

And by all means, share as much info on the development and creation process as you want :blahblah:. It's great to see an artist willing to talk about their stuff instead of just leaving one crappy ellipse in the description of a masterpiece :|

I hope that you do not take this as a bad critique.
From my point of view and bearing in mind that I play Magic for a lot of time, I think that this paint, this bird needs more color. Or more contrast... For the rest, it is very nice and marvelous.

Quite unusual subject for You? Nice worok :) I like all the colours, the dynamism of the tail, all the feathers... Great effect with the focus - sharpest on the head and beak, less in other places.

I must say that even knowing the card for so long, Do you believe me, Lady Terese, that I don't posses any Birds of Paradise on my collection? I wish I could have one. At least with this illustration. =D

Stunning...

Beautiful piece Terese. Your pieces have such positive energy to them.

I do have a question about your styles, You have illustrated with a couple different styles ( from your M.T.G. work ) more in a illustrated style like this, and more of a classically painted style.

Is there one over the other you prefer?

I love each of the iterations of "Birds of Paradise" Wizards of the Coast have commissioned -- but this is my favorite solely because its coloration and "pose" contrasts so well with the murky background, really emphasizing its majesty. Again: you're one heck of a storyteller despite working in such a static medium.

Oh, damn...
This is so amazing, Terese!
I used to live in brazilian rain forest and, somehow, this painting remind me there...
The bird in the rain forest aren't "paradise's", for sure, but they are beautiful and lovely as well. :D
