I love painting angels, so I was stoked when I saw this assignment come into my email. She's one of my recent favorites.
Sometimes when I'm working on a job there are only a few parts of the painting that I really "enjoy" working on. However, all of the aspects of this piece felt fun, from the clouds to the borders to the costuming.
It's painted traditionally, because I'm a dinosaur like that. Maybe if I spilled some turpentine on my Wacom I could make the transition. Anyway, I start with an acrylic underpainting, and then add oil and colored pencil on top. The gold areas were done with gold ink mixed with a little linseed oil.
If you'd like to read more about this piece there's a blog post available showing the actual card, original art description, sketch etc. [link]
Also, there are two different limited edition print sizes available. [link]
Wow! It sounds like you worked really hard on this piece, so I'll give you a well thought out comment. I can't believe you used so many different materials to do this painting! I'm very inspired, as a painter myself (you're not the only dinosaur!), to try these new techniques. I love Angels very much, and all the detail you put in this is amazing. It's so original, I can see the flames are of some Asian influence, The wings are beautifully textured, and how you came up with the outfit is mind boggling! The style of the hair and whip have I only seen similar to that of the artist Mocha. Absolutely beautiful work! I can't say anymore than that; I'm speechless!
What wonderful painting! Love the background and the detail on her boots and whip. To me she feels like she's some sort of Gerudo angel though from Zelda XD. But great job!
Beautiful work, easily my favorite art AND card out of the Commander set. I love your style. It keeps the fantasy setting feeling in Magic, which after all is a fantasy game, despite what new plane it goes to next. Absolutely gorgeous work.
